During a Yin Yoga practice, most postures are seated or close to the ground, and are held for 3 to 5 minutes. This stillness allows the joints and ligaments to strengthen and stretch, while releasing energy blockages as well as facilitating a state of meditation in the mind - teaching us how to deal with the inevitable discomforts of life. Blocks, bolsters and blankets are used for support, so the muscles are not engaged.
